apa yg aku buat;

Until I saw somebody use it for media player. So I went to download the Python script kat sini:

Kemudian cucuk Raspberry Pi tu dengan kabel HDMI, power cable (dia guna microSB cable, so saya guna kabel smartphone saya)

Kemudian lepas power on dia akan download baki imej.. tak pasti berapa saiz. Lama jugak la kan heheh

Install apa-apa add on.. dalam kes ni YouTube add on.

Dengan connection UNIFI 5Mbps dah ok. Cuma sebab Raspberry Pi saya generasi awal (256MB) jadi agak perlahan sikit nak load apa-apa plugin.

Installing HomeBrew on OS X Leopard (10.5)

I have this 2009's Mac Mini .. and ever since been using MacPorts. Then a friend suggested HomeBrew.

Seems pretty could, although I am not sure what difference it could bring since MacPorts already served the purpose (not entirely true, somehow you could have compilation breaks too).

10.5 uses Xcode 3.1.2. So I need to use 3.1.4. This could be done if I download the entire image (size around 900MB) and burn it to a DVD.

I need to register myself for an account with the status of Apple Developer and tick some checkboxes. Go here. When you successfully verified your email and click with authorization log in, you could see a search box. Insert Xcode and find 3.1.4.

And, I need to remove my MacPorts as well since it isn't suggested to have them co-exist.

Tips to remove your MacPorts are here and here

Sijil PhD DIY.. there goes our money

Google scholar at least. If someone out of the blue applied for a job and then you never verified them, it's your incompetency to check it out. Read this story... memang menyedihkan, habis duit dibazirkan untuk si mangkuk ayun yang satu ni. Dah la cakap besar (aku penah jumpa orang macam ni.. rasa nak penumbuk je. Padahal macam tong kosong je..)

Baca ni, dari sini:

The 45-year-old local lectured for more than two years at the university before securing a contract as a consultant at a government department.

Commercial Crime Investigation Department sources said the man earned almost RM7,000 as a lecturer and RM15,000 as a consultant for more than three years.

He was exposed last month when a former colleague at the university, incensed over the conman's constant bragging that he was now a high-earner with connections in high places, did background checks on the suspect.
It was then revealed that all the degrees and certificates which the conman had bragged about were fake and that the certificates were printed at his house in Nibong Tebal, Penang.

The colleague immediately informed the university which lodged a police report.

Sources said police raided the conman's house where they found out that his highest qualification was the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).

The man had conned the university and government department into believing he possessed a bachelor of science, master's in neuroscience and two doctorates in education and neuroscience, which were purportedly awarded  by universities in the United States and Canada.

Investigations revealed the conman had been working with the university between January 2009 and July last year. He then joined the government department in November last year until last month when his scam came to light.
"The suspect had been contacting his former colleagues at the university and boasting about his new salary and perks. That was his  undoing as that was when his former colleagues decided to run a background check on him," the source disclosed.

The conman was arrested on Aug 17.

He was released on police bail on Wednesday.

The case is being investigated for forgery for the purpose of cheating and for passing off a forged document as genuine.

This script solved the problem of missing "Scholar" link from the main bar. I don't know what Google, which was founded by PhD scholars think of. Perhaps because only few people who actually doing research need this.

Gaji dan harga rumah di Malaysia

Ini adalah fakta. Perlukan kita menyalahkan inflasi?

Takaful - your choice

Membicarakan tentang hal kecemasan terutama berkaitan kesihatan tentunya melibatkan hal kewangan.

Saya sendiri pernah mengambil peperiksaan ejen insuran dan menjadi ejen takaful lama dahulu.. tapi dah tak buat sales keh keh keh, maybe a comeback letter. It's an interesting area of job actually.

Kad Caj Al-Rajhi

Permohonan Kad Caj al-Rajhi sepertimana bank-bank lain memerlukan anda menyertakan salinan EA form, salinan slip gaji terkini 2-3 bulan, KWSP statement, salinan NRIC.

Wang Plastik oh Kad Hutang!

Sungguh aneh sebab kedai ni saya dah biasa swipe kad kredit kad saya since 2009 lagi!

Macam BIMB dia takde benefit apa pun, setakat rebate saja.

Problems with citations

Recently I got problem sorting out my book chapter's citation. Using IEEE style, the number was not sorted in order from 1,2... so on, instead jumping from 31..32 and scrambled all other the place.

I rarely write on Microsoft Windows, but since the writing need to be done fast (as well as the corrections) so I installed EndNote X3 from UTM software repository.

As easy as pie, I think corrected those things out - FAST.

However I still love writing in LaTeX. As for now. Wrote 3 papers using LaTeX and all of them accepted.  :)

Laman Runcit Online Lazada

Lazada ni satu website e-commerce, macam Amazon juga yang dulu jual buku, tapi sekarang dah macam-macam termasuk baju, mainan bayi, pakaian bayi etc.

Asalnya dari syarikat Jerman, Rocket. Dia dah buka branch di Indonesia, Filipina. According to online sources, kat Filipina banyak customer komplen pasal servis depa. Kat Malaysia mungkin sebab baru sangat, tak jumpa pulak orang yang komplen negatif. Kalo tengok review kat website depa tu nampak yang okey2 saja.. perhaps sebab "visible after approval" which seems vague for me.

By the way aku share satu e-voucher depa.. "blog150" .. tapi sahlaku sampai 18 Jun 2012 saja.

DIY Meme with Ruby based, CLI Memegen

As in this 2012, we can see a lots of meme scattered on the internet, spoofs of some movies, pictures and others.

Meme's definition can be looked here

I found out meme generator from an internet search, you can download the copy from github:

https://github.com/cmdrkeene/memegen

It works fine with my Linux Mint 12, first you may need to clone the copy to your computer;

git clone https://github.com/cmdrkeene/memegen

The change directory to memegen;

cd memegen

After that you may need to satisfy the dependencies - check the Readme. Most likely you need to install some ruby based library. ImageMagick package is a must.

How it works? Well, you can execute from memegen/bin/memegen --help to see the flag.

If you find (of course you will) typing the path considered difficult, simply use PATH exports:

export PATH=$PATH:/$HOME/memegen/bin

-change accordingly.

Samples of outputs:

It has templates in memegenerator. But if you want to use your own pictures.

mkdir $HOME/.memegen

Put your file in $HOME/.memegen

najmi@vostro-mint:~/memegen$ ls ~/.memegen/
angrybird.jpg  aufa-code.jpg  unifi.jpg

najmi@vostro-mint:~/memegen$ memegen unifi "with unifi" "no more complaints on capped bandwidth"
/tmp/meme-1336404480.jpeg

najmi@vostro-mint:~/memegen$ memegen angrybird "mum is not here" "you can play angrybird dad"
/tmp/meme-1336404510.jpeg

najmi@vostro-mint:~/memegen$ memegen aufa-code "python is cool" "lemme do import antigravity"
/tmp/meme-1336404544.jpeg

So basically check your /tmp

Have Fun!!

LG Cinema 3D Smart TV

I haven't been disconnected from TV (literally) for almost a year, after I sent my CRT TV back to my hometown. My mum had problem with her TV so I gave her mine.

After a year, I signed up for a fibre optic home broadband so now I look around for a "smart TV". I came across to LG's Cinema 3D Smart TV, which is super cool. After I looked at the features and specifications, what I can say it is really cutting edge technology with what you called it "broadband TV". You can access Google services, Youtube for example, Picasa and even Twitter!

The remote control also has "gesture" support, which means you can use it as if it is a "computer mouse". Cool ha?

Also, it supports content sharing from tablet, smartphones - I believe this is what DLNA technology offers.

Experience with TVs now never be the same, almost what happened to mobile phones when it now called as "smartphones" :)

I believe you will feel the same after you look the following info:

Comparing Online Book Retailers

As might as everyone else on the earth, we have limitation of budget for the things that we always want and need  - this apply for books too.

I try to look around for the best deals for book price. Tried out several retailers, Psychology Press (Psypress - which is a subs of T&F Book) - interesting they have different pricing scheme for the books that they sell.

Later I found out bookdepository. They sell book without shipping charges. But it is not always cheaper than let say, Amazon since sometimes the book price is higher than Amazon combined with the shipping fee. Last time I bought two books and it took more than a month (they refund me anyway). I still waiting for the other book from them since I bought a preordered book (yet to publish, at this time writing, I will be published in another two months.. given their track record I might only receive the book in the other three months?) Recently the put an offer for the already cheap books, for about 10% (this is quite a lot). I guess I will be convenient for you if you're already in UK, since it might be because of the cheap postage that caused the late book delivery.

Finally, Amazon. It's pretty convenient, of course the most trusted bookseller. I bought two books from Amazon on April 17 and just received the book on April 30, which is super cool. The packing is also very easy to open up so I am happy with Amazon. The price this time is cheaper than the previous bookseller so I am quite satisfied with their service.

Please tell your favorite!

By the way I found out this website which allows you to compare several book retailers so that it will be easier for you to decide which retailer you want to get a copy of your book.

Research and wordprocessing

Ever since I started my PhD study, I stick to LaTeX for most of my works - progress slides, conference papers and even for a "kenduri" event for my daughter's aqiqah - I created invitation memos with LaTeX.

LaTeX needs some perseverance for you to learn . For me I started typed LaTeX files with VI and later compiled the document with pdflatex command.

Later, I met Kile, a KDE based LaTeX editor. It provided GUI based with autocompletion and spell check function, which is cool to assist you writing up your work - conference paper or thesis.

Most of my friends comfortable with MS Word and EndNote.. which is okay. But some conference organizer literally require you to send them paper written in LaTeX (or in another way around). In this case you might need to find a friend who are familiar which such writing environment.

Hagiya Sofya, masjid jadi gereja, then sekarang jadi muzium je

Bergambar dengan Blue Mosque, view tak berapa lawa sebab mintak orang snapkan (a stranger actually.. dah tu nak jugak gambar dengan latar belakang Blue Mosque lantak laa)

Then dah rasa macam nak balik singgah dulu bazaar, cari t-shirt, scarf (ke apa nama tah, macam muffler, beli untuk orang rumah, my mum, my mother in law...), fridge magnet, keychain semua ada dekat-dekat situ.

:)

Unless you're admitted kot?)

Conference Trip to Cambridge, UK

I just went back from my UKSIM 2012 conference trip in University of Cambridge, UK. The last time I went out from Malaysia was in 2009, during my personal trip with wife to UK/Eire/France. This time, my employer provided travel and conference funding to the conference venue, which is awesome (super!!).

The conference was held in 28-30th March 2012, at the Emmanuel College, Univ of Cambridge. As I did not familiar (I guess same to many of us who haven't been there) to the university, it seems that this university is more than a normal university that I ever saw. It is actually a small town, comprises 22 colleges which is scattered in the Cambridgeshire. Interesting stuffs, most of the students here are not allowed to drive a car, so they either have to get a bicycle or get on the bus. Both are convenient since the bus arrives on time, and cycling does not give much problem too  given the weather is quite cold. (I am not sure about Winter, my a friend from Malaysia chose to walk on foot instead from his home to the school, even it was winter, sounds cool, eh?).

I stayed in De Vere University Arms, just besides Parker's Piece, a huge field where usually in the afternoon the students (I guess) played football there or having chit chat with their friends on the field (something which you may not see in Malaysia, I guess since the grass is different.. and there's insects too). In the weekend or when there is strong wind, I see people playing kites there.. - I guess kids.

The university is open to everyone, much like attraction to tourists. In some colleges however, the outsiders are not allowed to enter (perhaps, they are having state of the art facility/research - I do not know, just guessing).

As a small town, there are several shops which you notably will see if you got chance to come here:

-Mark and Spencer
-Clarks
-Apple Computer shop
-Gap and Gap for Kids
-Sunburry's - a big branch and smaller one.. you can get a bottle of mineral water for just 25-37pence here.. quite cheap
-Markets where you could buy fruits and souvenirs.

Souvenirs;
-T-shirts' prices are almost the same for all the shops, market or normal shoplots. You can expect a price tag from GBP7-GBP10 per t-shirt, or higher. If you can get cheaper price please tell so I could update.

For a Muslim like me, there are several halal food outlets over here, more than six shops spotted at Mills Road, one at Regent Street. You can even find a mosque nearby Mills road which holds two session of Jum'ah prayers due to the number of the people. I could easily spotted Malaysian faces once I get here.

To get here, there are several ways, either by train, bus (National Express) or cab. If you're rich, get a cab. Train is fast, but if you are on budget like me, take the bus, which cost GBP44.20 for return ticket from Heathrow Airport (you can opt to get "Open Return, which means it will valid within three months, but you have to call them to confirm which time you want to take as they will confirm you there will be a seat for you in the time you have chosen).

The most lovely experience is taking the punt boat, through the Cam River. It costs GBP10 per journey so I think it's worth it since you can see most colleges from the river.. and the punting boatman will also tell you the stories behind these places.

How to terminate P1 Wimax Service

I have been using P1 Wimax for more than a year, and after the one year contract finally ended, I decided to stop, due to economical reason - I have a kid, need to buy her diapers, formula milk when needed and somehow I want to use Celcom Instanet which is around RM50 per mth only.

My plan is 20GB @ RM99, which is okay, but I try not to bond with this fixed commitment so I can rearranged my financial things.

Anyway, the only way to terminate P1 if you are around Klang Valley is by going to their HQ in Petaling Jaya, bring along your P1 Modem and adaptor to their office.

That's all I can tell. Car park is okay, there are ample parking lots there so it will not be a problem at all.

Disable screen lock after hibernate for Linux Mint 12

You might encounter the password prompt after you close your laptop lid and find it very annoying since your laptop is in relatively a safe place. This tips meant for the after sleep screen lock.

1- Install dconf-editor , sudo apt-get install dconf-editor
2- Go to org->desktop->lockdown->disable lock screen

New home office

I just recently moved in to our new house..just nearby the previously rented home..bought a new computer table too..where I could put my files and research papers. Though I have aircond in my room,i try to be moderate with the electricity bills. Switch on aircond and I could suffer rm200 per month bill. since this is a subsale house, the previous owner already had the airconds installed

Backup phone - Nokia Asha 303

I recently need a backup phone since my SGS II can not be used for call since it cannot detect the SIM existence.

I traded in my previous Nokia 6610  with this unit.. beli RM90, trade in balik RM20.. tapi I have to let it go since I am not using it anymore

Why Asha 303, simply because it has Wifi/3G. Since most of the time I communicate with my wife using data plan, it's kinda waste if I use the "old brick which works" on the normal SMS for frequent conversation.

I consider this as "an investment". I don't buy Android phone for my backup phone simply because my experience with my SGS SL, Samsung Tablet 7.0 that I bought for my wife, SG Tablet 10.1 - mine and my previous HTC Wildfire  - Android devices (stock OS) suffer lagging .. 40% of the time.

So this Asha 303, running S40 operating system, just "works" for basic apps. Some apps for example Google+ does not responding. Heck, I just need WhatsApps since it works.. the rest is just bonus.

But, I missed the brut Mod map on my SGS II, what can I say, I need to send it to Samsung service centre after the Chinese New Year.
